Outside of his acting career, Stewart was an aviation enthusiast, beginning his pilot training in 1935 and serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. His passion for flying was lifelong, offering him an escape from the demands of Hollywood.
In addition, Stewart demonstrated creativity through poetry and writing, showcasing his introspective side. He enjoyed exploring music, painting, and horseback riding, and devoted considerable time to philanthropy, supporting various charitable causes throughout his life.
