Part 2/8:
Initially established as a lesser-known entity, TSMC has surged into prominence due to a global chip shortage exacerbated by the pandemic and an unprecedented demand surge for technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). TSMC now produces a staggering 92% of the world's most advanced chips, powering devices from Nvidia GPUs to Apple iPhones. The Arizona facility represents a pivotal moment as TSMC moves production of these critical technologies to U.S. soil for the first time in its history.
Pilot production has commenced at the Arizona fab, which just a few years ago existed only as a foundation of steel beams and dirt. With plans for two more fabs expected by the decade's end, TSMC is steering towards fulfilling a pronounced demand for local chip production.
