Despite keeping the painting concealed in his apartment for two years, Vincenzo Peruggia’s confidence wavered. In 1913, he attempted to sell the painting to an art dealer in Florence, claiming he wished to return the Mona Lisa to her rightful home. The art dealer, Alfredo Geri, and the director of the Uffizi Gallery, Giovanni Poggi, were skeptical at first but ultimately realized the significance of the opportunity and acted quickly.
