During basic SEAL training, participants are subjected to harsh conditions intended to push their limits—wet, cold, and tired. The challenges they face teach them that feelings of motivation will fade. Participants may feel no desire to re-enter the freezing water after a brief respite; despite this lack of motivation, they must still act.
Discipline becomes the essential driving force—the structured act of doing what needs to be done despite personal feelings. It is during this training that they learn to suppress their emotions in favor of compliance with orders, thus fostering an intrinsic discipline that serves beyond the bounds of the training environment.
