The 2020 season was marred by adversity when Barkley suffered a devastating ACL tear, sidelining him for the entire year. Coming back from such a serious injury posed numerous challenges, and while he returned for the 2021 season, Barkley struggled to regain his prior form. A brief resurgence in 2022 was overshadowed by the Giants' overall lack of success, despite him rushing for over 1,300 yards and earning a Pro Bowl nod.
During the 2023 season, inconsistency plagued the Giants, leading to a disappointing 6-11 record. Despite continued strong performances from Barkley, management was hesitant to invest heavily in a running back, ultimately allowing Saquon to explore free agency.
