Every week seems to bring a new wave of speculation concerning Alonso's negotiations with the Mets. According to Andy Martino, the Mets and Alonso are currently not close to finalizing a deal, even as they hope to progress soon. Adding complexity to the situation, Scott Boras, Alonso's agent, denied earlier suggestions that he was utilizing Prince Fielder's infamous 9-year, $214 million contract as a benchmark for Alonso's value—a comparison that many deemed unreasonable.
