While baseball initially dominated his focus, Mahomes's football talents began to shine during his junior year in high school, where he threw for over 3,800 yards and 46 touchdowns. His standout senior season saw him pass for 4,619 yards and 50 touchdowns, coupled with 15 rushing touchdowns. Despite these accomplishments, he was only rated as a three-star recruit, receiving offers from several universities. Ultimately, he chose to attend Texas Tech University, where coach Kliff Kingsbury promised a unique opportunity to play both football and baseball.
