Part 2/9:

Mapping the local universe is a complex endeavor. Currently, our position within the Milky Way Galaxy presents significant challenges as interstellar dust obstructs our observations. This region of obscurity is aptly named the Zone of Avoidance, a term that captures the essence of the difficulties faced by astronomers as they attempt to glimpse beyond our own galactic veil.

To form a comprehensive map, scientists must locate and measure distances to thousands, if not millions, of galaxies. This task is straightforward for a small number of galaxies but becomes daunting when striving for a complete survey of the local universe. While extensive surveys catalog distant galaxies efficiently, our understanding of our immediate cosmic surroundings remains surprisingly incomplete.
