After TriStar Pictures picked up the script, concern arose about the treatment of the Cindy character, with one executive feeling that she was portrayed unflatteringly. Despite initial hesitations, Disney's Touchstone Pictures ultimately embraced the project, recognizing its potential amidst the controversies.

The film also struggled with its title. Originally branded "Boy Rents Girl," the name was perceived to be somewhat sexist. Disney CEO Michael Eisner suggested the title "Can't Buy Me Love," which not only aligned with the overarching themes but was also a nod to the famous Beatles song.
