In the late '80s, all three members were concurrently pursuing solo projects, achieving considerable success. However, they reunited to create their 14th studio album, "We Can't Dance." Initial musical sessions were devoid of ideas; the band’s approach was to improvise in the studio. As Banks explained, avoiding individual ideas helped maintain the distinctiveness of Genesis's sound compared to their solo endeavors. This strategy became a conscious policy, allowing for a creative freedom that differed from their individual careers.
