At the time of the album's recording, significant shifts within the music industry included the emergence of the compact disc, which allowed for longer albums. While other bands were tempted to fill their records with excess material, Genesis balanced radio-ready hits like "I Can't Dance" with extended tracks such as "Driving the Last Spike," ensuring the album remained faithful to their roots while appealing to contemporary audiences.
"We Can't Dance" achieved commercial success, reaching the top of the UK charts and peaking at number four in the USA. Although Genesis briefly attempted to continue their journey with new singer Ray Wilson following Collins’s departure, their subsequent album "Calling All Stations" flopped, leading to the band’s dissolution.
