Among the most persistent myths are tales of how the Library of Alexandria acquired its vast collection of texts. One such narrative suggests that the library would take possession of books from ships docking in Alexandria, copying them before returning the originals. This story, as well as the claim that the library cunningly obtained all of Athenian dramatists’ works, lacks credible historical evidence and is often dismissed by scholars.
