To assess the warmth of the socks, an electric kettle was used to boil water. The hot water was placed in bottles inside each sock, left outdoors in 36° Fahrenheit ambient conditions for an hour. The results were telling, with Darn Tough dropping to 99.3°F post-test and several competitors performing better, particularly the Fox River at 106°F. The REI and Smartwool socks performed the worst, losing about 75°F of heat.
