Recognizing the imminent threat posed by quantum computing, scientists have been proactive in establishing encryption methods resistant to quantum attacks. In 2016, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) initiated a global competition to identify algorithms resilient to both classical and quantum decryption methods. As of July 2022, four candidate algorithms for post-quantum cryptography have been selected, with many based on lattice mathematics.
