The mayor noted a silver lining amidst the chaos, as Pikeville has a designated flood diversion system established in the 1960s, which rerouted the river around the downtown area. While the town has benefitted from this protective measure, it still faced challenges in dealing with the floodwaters, particularly in certain neighborhoods and neighboring communities. The most severely affected area appears to be the community of Col Run, which has reportedly suffered extensive damage.
