Over two decades, the exploration of consciousness has undergone a remarkable transformation. The early 1990s marked the beginning of a new era in which the scientific study of consciousness began stepping out of the shadows of behaviorism—a dominant attitude in the psychology and neuroscience fields that emphasized observable behavior over subjective experience. Thought leaders, including the likes of Roger Penrose, Francis Crick, and Gerald Edelman, laid the groundwork for what has now become a diverse and vibrant interdisciplinary approach to understanding consciousness.
