Constructed in 1936 and receiving its first shipment of gold a year later, Fort Knox has only been opened to the public on two occasions in its history—one of which was in 2017 when then Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin visited the site. The vault’s intense security, including armed guards and surveillance, has rendered it somewhat of a mystery to the public, with journalists having had access only once since 1974.
