As the weeks passed, police responded to a spate of shootings that all shared similar characteristics. By February 6, 2021, the frequency of these events culminated in a tragic homicide. On that fateful Saturday evening, residents in the East Rock neighborhood heard gunfire, and shortly after, 26-year-old Kevin Jong, a graduate student at Yale’s School of the Environment, was shot eight times. Eyewitness accounts suggested that after a brief collision with a dark SUV, Kevin exited his Prius to exchange information, only to come under fire.
