In the mid-1980s, Davies led the band into a new era with albums like Brother Where You Bound (1985) and Free as a Bird (1987). The latter saw Supertramp experimenting with synthesizers and electronic dance music, but after a world tour, Davies quietly retired.

Meanwhile, Hodgson was making his mark as a solo artist, releasing albums that emphasized his softer musical sensibilities. By 1993, the original members reunited briefly to perform at a tribute dinner for A&M Records co-founder Jerry Moss. However, even this collaboration was short-lived, ending in more disagreements over management.
