Amidst this cyclical reality, some Democrats are advised to simply wait for the Republicans to overreach or face backlash from the electorate. While historical precedents provide a sliver of hope in this respect, it is important to recognize that merely waiting might not suffice if the Democrats fail to address structural issues.

The current political climate is significantly different than it was a decade ago. With gerrymandering and voting restrictions, the playing field has been obscured to the Democrats' disadvantage. Relying on historical patterns alone does not account for these newly established barriers. In addition, Democrats cannot simply appeal to their base— independent voters are crucial, and they require a coherent vision of what the party stands for.
