Born on April 25, 1947, in Hamilton, Ontario, Kathy was drawn to music from a young age. By the age of 16, she was mingling with Canadian rockabilly groups, including one band known simply as "I." Her early connections with musicians led her to develop a close bond with Levon Helm and Richard Manuel of The Band. Kathy's youth saw her not just as a fan but as an integral part of the band's life; she toured with them, and during this period, became a mother to a child dubbed the "band baby," due to uncertainty around paternity.
