One of the most significant repercussions of Guido's work was the establishment of a standardized system of music notation that persisted through the centuries. Before Guido, various forms of music notation existed, but they lacked the uniformity necessary for consistent performance. His system enabled musicians to understand the specific notes of a melody irrespective of the individual performing it—a revolutionary step in music education.
As time passed, the original syllables Guido used evolved into the familiar solfège system that we recognize today: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti. The shift to "Do" from "Ut" transformed it into a more open syllable that was easier to sing, while "Ti" was added later to account for the leading tone.
