The story of Van Halen does not start in the late 1970s but traces back to the 1960s, with brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen's formation of their first band, the Broken Combs, in 1964. They performed at school functions and parties, eventually going through several name changes such as Trojan Rubber Company, Genesis, and ultimately Mammoth. In the early 70s, realizing another band had already claimed the name, they transitioned to using their last name, Van Halen.
