The Austro-Piedmontese War erupted in 1859 when the Austrians launched a pre-emptive strike. Allied French forces assisted Piedmont-Sardinia, leading to a series of victories, including at the devastating Battle of Solferino. However, dissatisfaction lingered as the conflict ended without full unification. Significant territories were gained, yet Austria maintained control over Venetia. The agreement forced Piedmont-Sardinia to part with Nice, an Italian-speaking territory, to appease France.
