Don't assume that everyone you encounter will speak English. It can be seen as rude to start a conversation in English without first acknowledging the language barrier. Invest time in learning a few key phrases in Italian; locals appreciate the effort and will often respond more positively to you.
Bring Cash
While credit cards are accepted in many establishments, cash is still king in Italy. Various small transactions, including using public restrooms or buying a simple snack, often require cash. Having backup credit cards is also wise to avoid being stranded if your primary card is refused or lost.
