In 260 AD, a brief Gaelic Empire emerged but was soon reclaimed by the Roman Emperor Aurelian. The 5th century saw invasions by Germanic tribes, notably the Franks, which facilitated the establishment of the Frankish Empire, eventually forming the heartland of the Carolingian Empire. The Treaty of Verdun in 843 divided the Empire into three kingdoms, with West Francia evolving into what is now modern France.
