By the turn of the century, the American Mafia's influence dwindled with increasing competition from other organized crime groups, notably the Russian Mafia. Yet, while federal investigations intensified post-9/11, leading to a drop in resources allocated to organized crime, the Mafia's legacy and operations endured.
