In response to wars, famine, and oppressive conditions in their homelands, millions of Irish, Southern Italians, and Eastern European Jews sought solace on American shores. However, the dream of prosperity quickly dimmed as nativist sentiments swept through society, creating a hostile environment for these new citizens.
