Major groups, including the Wo Group and Sun Yee On, solidified their positions within the city, creating a complex web of informal governance. The infamous Kowloon Walled City became a symbol of this power—a self-governing enclave teeming with Triad activity, where law enforcement was largely absent.
Despite their descent into crime, the Triads retained various ceremonial practices from their past, such as the initiation rituals of their forebearers. By the time of recent protests and subsequent violent crackdowns, the resurgence of the Triads served as a stark reminder of the shadows cast by historical grievances and state violence.
