In practical terms, researchers are exploring the use of fiber optic cables to facilitate the transmission of entangled photons, overcoming some of the distance limitations presented by classic computing infrastructures. This could allow for robust quantum key distribution and ultimately pave the way for the Quantum Internet, where quantum computers across long distances can securely share information.
However, establishing a Quantum Internet will not be without its challenges. Network infrastructure needs to be developed to handle the unique requirements of quantum data transmission, necessitating a new network stack fully optimized for quantum communications.
