Aaronson introduced the idea of "optimistic induction," contrasting it with the "pessimistic induction" present in the philosophy of science. While pessimistic induction suggests that past scientific theories have been proven false and, as such, current theories may be too, Aaronson argued that the opposite could be true for AI. Despite skepticism about AI's capabilities, he posits that technological advancements in AI will continue to yield better outputs, allowing interactions to become as seamless as conversing with a Star Trek computer.
