Born one of 11 siblings in New York's Hudson Valley, Mel Gibson's roots are steeped in ordinary life, far removed from the glamour of Hollywood. His family's relocation to Sydney paved the way for his entry into the performing arts. Gibson's first major role in "Mad Max" in 1979 launched him into superstardom, with the film becoming one of the most profitable in history.
