Fueled by a desire to make a difference, Ruben became a police officer in 1992. He graduated from the academy in 1993 and served in South Central LA, assigned to patrol the very neighborhoods he grew up in. Ruben went undercover as a student to combat drug use in schools, but his experiences led him down dangerous paths. While attempting to buy drugs under the guise of an undercover operation, he faced a life-threatening situation when gang members attempted to rob him, culminating in a shootout that left him injured.
