After leading the league in multiple categories in 1914, Speaker faced challenges in 1916 when he was traded to the Cleveland Indians due to salary disputes with the Red Sox. The trade, once deemed the worst in Red Sox history, would lead to a resurgence in Speaker's already stellar career. With the Indians, he became the highest-paid player in baseball and led the league in hits and batting average during his first season.
In 1919, Speaker became the player-manager of the Indians, introducing the revolutionary platoon system. This strategy matched right-handed batters against left-handed pitchers, an innovation that has persisted in modern-day baseball.
