Founded in the early 1960s within the walls of San Quentin prison, the Aryan Brotherhood (AB) emerged in response to significant societal and racial tensions that mirrored the broader Civil Rights Movement. At San Quentin, the integration of inmates from diverse racial backgrounds triggered violence, ultimately leading to the formation of the AB. Originally established as a white supremacist group, the Brotherhood sought protection and solidarity among its members, who primarily hailed from impoverished, predominantly white communities in California.
