The term "yachting" gained traction following a 2013 investigation by The Hollywood Reporter which uncovered the rampant culture of yacht parties at the Cannes Film Festival. A former modeling agency owner, Eli Nahas, claimed that annually 30 to 40 luxury yachts populated the Cannes bay, each hosting around ten women—often in scantily clad attire. These individuals, referred to as "yacht girls," often found themselves in arrangements that extended beyond mere social interactions, receiving envelopes containing sums of cash as compensation for their company and any favors rendered during the evening.
