By the late 20th century, with a growing need for modern correctional facilities that could provide medical treatment alongside secure incarceration, the Bureau of Prisons selected Butner as the site for a new complex. The Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) Butner officially opened in the late 1990s and has since expanded to include multiple facilities that cater to different inmate populations and security levels, incorporating health services that have contributed to its notoriety.
