As time moved on, cheating methods evolved in increasingly ridiculous ways. One such case involves Hippolyte Aucouturier, who attempted to use a hidden string to hitch a ride while racing. His ingenious but ultimately flawed idea of attaching a piece of cork to bite down on to be towed by a car ended when spectators caught on to his scheme.
Another notorious story is that of Jean Robic, who won in 1947 by strategically adding lead to his water bottle to gain weight during descents, thus allowing him to descend faster. This led to a trend among cyclists that prompted the UCI to ban such tactics.
