The Mechanics of THAAD
THAAD is designed for a multi-layered, integrated ballistic missile defense. The term “high altitude” in its name highlights its ability to intercept missiles at both endo-atmospheric and exo-atmospheric altitudes, reaching engagement heights of up to 93 miles above Earth's surface. This capacity allows THAAD to neutralize enemy threats before they land, employing a non-explosive kinetic kill mechanism. This means that when two missiles collide in midair, both are destroyed without triggering a secondary explosion on the ground.
