In many ways, Gary Coleman became the heart of Diff'rent Strokes when he impressed producer Norman Lear with an impromptu audition. Having gained minor fame through commercials in Chicago, Coleman was brought to Hollywood when he was only 8 years old. His role in Diff'rent Strokes was unconventional from the start—it transformed from a precursor concept involving a wealthy white man adopting two Black children to a show that fleshed out more relatable characters and storylines.
Behind the transformation was actor Conrad Bain, whose influence helped reshape the show's premise. Premiering on November 3, 1978, the series quickly established itself within the top 30 ratings, due largely to Coleman’s breathtaking portrayal of Arnold.
