Romano drew heavily from his personal life when developing the show's characters, especially the Barone children, mirroring his own kids with names such as Ally, Gregory, and Matthew. However, seeking to maintain a fictional distance, some names were altered as the show progressed. Early casting choices reflected this, with real twin brothers portraying Ray's sons before being replaced as the twins visibly aged.
