Rebranding a Regime

As Kim Jong-un sought to soften his image, particularly in 2018, Yo Jong played a crucial role. Her charm offensive during the inter-Korean summit painted a picture of possibility and hope. Yet while she managed perceptions, Yo Jong remained deeply entrenched in the security apparatus that controls North Korea. Diplomacy was a tactical move to distract from the regime’s underlying brutality.
