In the wake of Otto's death, his parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, increasingly became outspoken advocates for justice, shifting from trying to secure their son's release to confronting the North Korean regime. They called for North Korea to be reclassified as a state sponsor of terrorism, highlighting the circumstances surrounding Otto's death as justification.
The Warmbiers later took legal action against the North Korean government, which led to a historic judgment in a federal court that awarded them $501 million for their son's wrongful death. Yet, finding a way to collect that judgment presented substantial challenges, as North Korea consistently denied any wrongdoing.
