Born on April 26, 1894, in Egypt to a wealthy family, Hess experienced the British occupation firsthand, which fostered a complex admiration for Britain. He received a diverse education across Egypt, Germany, and Switzerland, originally set to follow in his father's footsteps in the shipping industry. However, with the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Hess enlisted in the Bavarian artillery regiment. His military career was intense; he fought in major battles, sustained severe injuries, and received commendations for his bravery. Eventually promoted to second lieutenant by the war's end, he witnessed the economic devastation that followed Germany's defeat.
