In the midst of her struggles, at 19, Moore landed her first significant role on the soap opera General Hospital. This marked the beginning of her rise in Hollywood. However, off-screen, she struggled with addiction and the pressures of fame. With the support of her director, she managed to get sober just in time for her breakout role in St. Elmo’s Fire (1985), which launched her into the spotlight and cemented her status among the "Brat Pack," a group of young Hollywood stars in the 1980s.
