Despite their soaring success, the strains of fame began to take a toll on the band's dynamics. In 1990, drummer Steven Adler was fired due to drug issues only to be reinstated after promising to quit. However, his struggles continued, leading to further complications during the recording sessions for the Use Your Illusion albums. He was eventually dismissed, and a year later, he filed a lawsuit claiming he had been fraudulently stripped of his partnership in the band.
The legal battle was settled in 1993, with Adler receiving $2.5 million and restoring his royalities—though the damage to the band's unity was irrevocable.
