Tensions between Canada and China continue to escalate as Canada condemned China's execution of four of its dual citizens on drug-related charges. Canada's Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly called for clemency but was met with Beijing’s staunch defense of its judicial actions.
The individuals executed were thought to be ethnically Chinese and were citizens of Canada, with China not recognizing dual citizenship. This incident coincides with a history of strained relations between the two nations since Canada's arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in 2018, subsequently followed by the detention of two Canadians in what was perceived as retaliation.
