At the turn of the millennium, just prior to the events of September 11, the NYPD boasted approximately 40,000 officers serving an 8.5 million-strong population. Today, that number has dropped to about 34,000 despite an ongoing trend of retirements and transfers to other police agencies, often offering better pay and working conditions.
