The construction process is incredibly intricate, involving continuous monitoring and operation by a team of around 20. Underground maintenance and utility access corridors are also part of the design, although they remain hidden from the general public using the tunnel above.
The Turning of the Machine
Once the TBM completes its span, the engineering team faced the challenging task of turning the massive machine to begin tunneling in the opposite direction. This complicated maneuver involved disconnecting the TBM's shield from its gantries and utilizing a specially designed nitrogen table to rotate it 180 degrees before reassembling the entire setup for the next leg of the project.
