Legacy Social Media Persuades Users to Function as both Workers and the Product

A comment by @theycallmedan on X made me complemplate the mechanics of value flow on X. If you have an X account please leave a comment on his post, it may help other discover HIVE.

I started this brief entry as an X post, and thought it made more sense to post here and share the link on X. Hive is amazing, its utility seems to grow exponentially rather than at a liner rate with increase in audience. 10,000 new active and engaged users on X for instance would have no discernible impact - here on Inleo.io and HIVE that would like trigger a new surge in innovation and birth a dozen new projects.

Legacy Social Media
X, and every legacy social media platform treat users as both value producers (content) and consumers.

95% of the users of legacy social media will not realize a quantifiable value in exchange for the content they produce. Users are in a degree biological validation units, with tastemakers and larger influencer functioning exactly like validators in a delegate proof of stake network. The parallels are unsettling.

X users create value for X, and some for themselves, varying proportionately with the intentionality and awareness of the users. X is not well designed to allocate and transmit tangible value to users below certain thresholds.

The value propositions and mechanics on X mean that content creators will generally converge on large topics to maximize their value generation on the platform. A synthetic homogeneity or vector is formed around a handful of topics at one time.

The larger philosophical value of X is perhaps as a public platform, where macro issues can be discussed and debated at immense scales. It was interesting to see some accounts suspended or demonetized when taking up an opposing side of an issue as Musk.

The danger of large, centralized platforms is that vast swaths of humanity can be subjected to cognitive manipulation via algorithmic targeting and a subset of influencers or tastemakers can be managed as nodes with remarkably small expenditures of capital or platform resource.

Another dimension of consideration, is that interaction on X is tokenizable data - suitable for the grist mills of AI. X and Meta are certainly the largest human data farms in the western world. The flow of value appears to be weighted to favor X over the users, even if capture or conversion of that value is not immediately obvious.
